When death finally comes to meet & greet you with it's open arms, the way it's met in return will all be for the self. Whether it be met with respect, calm & candor, or be it a miserable and petty affair met with fear & shame, it will still only be for the self. The truth is that we enter this world alone, we wander it alone, and we will eventually die alone.
But try not to think of death in terms of it's ominous & depressing aspects for death is also transcendental and beautiful as well. In fact, thinking about one's death can actually enhance your life. Believe it or not, it's the constant reminder of death that brings such beauty to the world and also enhances our experience of it.
In most dealings in my personal life I find I do things for the crowd, for the reaction, the story or even just the experience. But no matter which one I end up doing it for, it's always from the perspective of my death bed. What regrets will I have? What will I wish I had done? How do I want to be remembered? What's stopping me from achieving any of this? The answer to the last question is usually, fear.
Fear can be a great motivator but it can also be debilitating. The question is whether or not it's the driving force in your life. If it is then you will never do anything worth while in my opinion. My experience has shown me that most of the things a person wants in life are found on the other side of fear. Fear is the great divider between just existing and experiencing existence.
Fear in and of itself is a vague and ambiguous term that covers the entire gamut of existence but in reality we are talking about one fear, the fear of death. No matter what your fear is it usually stems from the fear of death, or extreme discomfort. The irony here is that both these fears are inevitable consequences of life. No matter how much you try you will still experience pain and discomfort and you will eventually die. Period.
Again, don't think of this in a depressing way. Perspective shapes experience so just change your perspective and therefore your experience. So now that we have established the inevitability of your fears, what's stopping you from choosing your own terms in life? Why not choose your discomforts, take risks that may lead to painful experiences & choose the terms of your death? Everything you could ever want is on the other side of fear, so again, what's stopping you?
